Make this creamy sausage cream cheese dip using just three main ingredients. It is a warm, savory appetizer perfect for parties, game days, or any gathering. You can prepare this dip easily on the stovetop or in a slow cooker.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound breakfast sausage (pork or turkey)
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 (10 ounce) can diced tomatoes and green chilies (Rotel), undrained
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for extra cheesiness)
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder (optional)

Instructions

  1. If using the stovetop method, brown the sausage in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess grease.
  2. If using the slow cooker method, place the browned sausage into the slow cooker insert.
  3. Add the softened cream cheese and the undrained can of diced tomatoes and green chilies to the skillet (or slow cooker).
  4. If using, stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and onion powder now.
  5. For stovetop: Cook over low heat, stirring frequently until the cream cheese is completely melted and the dip is smooth and hot. This takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
  6. For slow cooker: Cook on low for 1 to 2 hours or on high for 1 hour, stirring occasionally until everything is melted and combined.
  7. Serve your hot sausage dip immediately with tortilla chips, crackers, or vegetable sticks.

Notes

  • For a spicier dip, use hot breakfast sausage or add a dash of hot sauce to the mixture.
  • If the dip thickens too much while serving, stir in a tablespoon of milk or heavy cream to restore creaminess.
  • This recipe is excellent for making ahead; assemble all ingredients (except cheese if using) and refrigerate. Add 30 minutes to the cooking time when reheating.
