1 pound breakfast sausage (pork or turkey)
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 (10 ounce) can diced tomatoes and green chilies (Rotel), undrained
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for extra cheesiness)
1 teaspoon onion powder (optional)
Instructions
If using the stovetop method, brown the sausage in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess grease.
If using the slow cooker method, place the browned sausage into the slow cooker insert.
Add the softened cream cheese and the undrained can of diced tomatoes and green chilies to the skillet (or slow cooker).
If using, stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and onion powder now.
For stovetop: Cook over low heat, stirring frequently until the cream cheese is completely melted and the dip is smooth and hot. This takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
For slow cooker: Cook on low for 1 to 2 hours or on high for 1 hour, stirring occasionally until everything is melted and combined.
Serve your hot sausage dip immediately with tortilla chips, crackers, or vegetable sticks.
Notes
For a spicier dip, use hot breakfast sausage or add a dash of hot sauce to the mixture.
If the dip thickens too much while serving, stir in a tablespoon of milk or heavy cream to restore creaminess.
