Make the famous, buttery, garlicky shrimp from the North Shore food trucks right in your kitchen. This recipe is quick, intensely flavorful, and perfect served over rice to soak up the rich sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 10 cloves garlic, minced finely
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for island kick)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • Cooked white rice, for serving

Instructions

  1. Pat the peeled and deveined shrimp completely dry using paper towels. This helps them sear better.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter with the olive oil.
  3. Add the finely minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for about 1 to 2 minutes until the garlic is fragrant. Do not let the garlic brown or burn.
  4. Increase the heat to medium-high. Add the dried shrimp to the skillet in a single layer if possible.
  5. Season the shrimp with salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper, if using.
  6. Cook the shrimp for 2 to 3 minutes per side until they turn pink and opaque. Avoid overcooking.
  7. Remove the skillet from the heat. Stir in the fresh lemon juice and chopped parsley.
  8. Toss the shrimp gently to coat them thoroughly in the garlic butter sauce.
  9. Serve the Hawaiian garlic shrimp immediately over generous portions of hot, steaming white rice so the rice absorbs the rich garlic butter sauce.

Notes

  • For the most authentic flavor, use high-quality butter.
  • If you prefer a slightly crispier texture, dredge the dried shrimp lightly in cornstarch before adding them to the hot oil and butter mixture.
  • This dish cooks very fast; prepare all your ingredients before you start cooking.
